This event features a fun-filled evening of food, live music provided by DJ Mihali, and of course, Greek dancing! The menu will include several Greek favorites.

Brief History of Greek Dancing:
Greek dancing dates back thousands of years. It is a folk art that plants it’s roots during the Roman/Byzantine Empire’s occupation of Greece. It is based on a form of dance that was popular in Constaninople (modern day Istanbul). The popular Greek folk dance starts slow and gradually speeds up and gains intensity. The dance was the invention of The Greek Butcher’s Guild. The Greek soldiers made this dance popular. They performed the dance in preparation of their fifth revolt Turkish empire. Although the revolt ultimately failed, the dance became a mainstay in the traditions of the Greek culture.
Today, there are many variations of the traditional Greek folk dance. The variations differ from region to region of Greece. The Greek dance variations include solo version, male version, female version, and a mixed version. The dances known as Syrtos and Kalamatianos are the most popular. Syrtos is slow, peaceful and serene. Kalamatianos is fast paced, rugged and lively. Both versions are performed in open circles.
Greek folk dancing has deep roots in the traditions of the Greek people and the history of Greece. The dance is a part of social and ceremonial occasions.
